Your consumer unit, still often called the fuse board, is the heart of your home's electrics, and it is worth replacing when it can no longer protect you properly. The clearest signs are an old-style board with rewireable fuses rather than modern breakers, no RCD safety switches to cut the power fast if a fault happens, a wooden back board on a very old unit, or a board that trips repeatedly. If you are rewiring, adding a big new circuit such as an electric shower, or an EICR has flagged the board, that is usually the moment too.
A modern consumer unit gives every circuit its own protection, so one faulty circuit no longer plunges the whole home into darkness, and it guards against both electric shock and fire. We upgrade boards right across Southend and south Essex, from the older terraces near the seafront to the 1930s semis around Rayleigh, fitting good-quality units and testing every circuit first so any hidden faults show up before the swap rather than after. As a NAPIT Approved firm the work is certified, and most upgrades are done in a single day.
Signs it is time
Rewireable fuses, no RCD protection or a board that trips a lot all point to an upgrade being due.
Tested first
We check your circuits before the swap, so any hidden faults are found and priced up front, not sprung on you after.
Certified in a day
Most boards are replaced in a single day and fully certified, all NAPIT Approved.
Your questions, answered
How long does a consumer unit replacement take?
Most are done in a single day, with the power off for only part of that time. We test every circuit before and after, so the job is done properly.
Do I have to replace it, or can it be repaired?
Sometimes a single faulty part can be replaced, but an old board with rewireable fuses or no RCD protection is usually better upgraded outright. We will tell you honestly which your board needs.
Will a new board trip more than my old one?
It can seem that way at first, because a modern board is more sensitive and catches faults an old one ignored. That is the protection working. We test every circuit so anything it flags is put right.
